Summary
Chapters 21 – 24 document the trip up to New Hampshire and the first few days once the family is there. Once Mama has the news about the life insurance, she is immediately more relaxed and positive, encouraging Dixie to suggest a family trip up to New Hampshire. Mama buys a car and the children get excited. When Mama tells Uncle Ray of her plans, he is hesitant and awkward, making excuses. He walks out of the house and returns inebriated, swinging a six-pack.
Over the next few days the family starts to plan their trip but Dixie still feels incredibly nervous around Uncle Ray, and his behavior becomes more strange and erratic. She overhears him laying guilt trips on Mama for his generosity. Dixie notices her mother is incredibly excited for their upcoming trip but starts to worry she will not want to return to...
