Hamilton

Hamilton is the small fishing town in which Ransom is living at the start of the novel. After losing his job at the hospital following its closure, Ransom moves into his houseboat and starts spending time on the local Hamilton lake. From the boat, he observes the rapidly changing environment around him. Although almost all of Hamilton's residents have left the town en masse, Ransom is reluctant to depart. It is not until after he hears Lomax discussing his plans for the future, that Ransom realizes it is time to leave.

In Part Three, after 10 years away, Ransom returns to Hamilton with his friends. Although he initially thought he was returning to the past, when he arrives back in Hamilton, he realizes that the former version of the town no longer exists. Hamilton therefore has become the future.
