Summary
In Chapter 47, Sara is sleeping alone in her house, but she has kept the dogs Libby saved. Their barks wake her up in time for her to hear someone enter the house. It is her father, the second person to awake from the virus. He looks slightly malnourished but like himself, except Sara feels there is something imperceptibly wrong with him. She tries to tell him about Libby, but he says she “already told [him] that,” despite this being their first conversation upon his return (253). He continues to write before telling Sara anything. His awakening made the news, but it is still not enough to take him away from the writing. He runs an entire pen out of ink. Police visit the next morning looking for Thomas Peterson, Sara’s father.
