Summary
In Chapter 37, Sara and Libby search the house for small memories of their mother and enter the attic they have never been allowed in. They find their mother’s name, Marie, on two boxes there, one of which is full of clothes, the other, jewelry. Sara is unsatisfied, though Libby is not. Sara recognizes a black bulldog in the street as Akil’s, and Libby brings it into the backyard without hesitation. The two decide to risk going outside to take the dog, Charlie, back to his house down the street. They do not notice the lights of Akil’s house on in the middle of the day. Charlie bounds into the open front door, the girls go inside, and within a minute Sara sees the black ‘x’ painted on the front door. They run home, Charlie at their heels. They hose him...
