Summary

“Tree” began with Neftalí finding a large, isolated pine tree in the forest. He admired the beauty of its pinecones and kept one for himself. Looking up to thank the tree for its treasure, Neftalí spotted an eagle take flight from a high branch. While Neftalí imagined sharing his discoveries with a friend or even Father, he heard a chucao bird’s call. In his excitement, he looked around and forgot which direction the bird called from. When he heard it again from his right, Neftalí wished that its luck would bring him “a close friend and Father’s affection” (112-113). Neftalí heard Father’s whistle and returned to the train.
