Milly
Milly is one of the central characters in "The Doves' Nest," and arguably the main character due to the fact that the third person narration often uses free indirect discourse to adopt Milly's perspective. Milly is quiet, meek, and often acquiesces to her mother's wishes. But she is also inwardly bored by her life in the French Riviera and longs to travel and see the world. The arrival of Mr. Prodger reignites her sense of independence and autonomy, and she gradually begins speaking more and dispelling with decorum. The story suggests that the death of her father altered her relationship with her mother so severely that she has been unable to behave the way she used to and derive joy from the same activities of her past.
