Importance: These lines discuss Mr. Phillip. He had been taught by the English, and in doing so, he became a proponent of the English language. He does not want his students to speak their native Twi anymore as he believes that English is the more elevated language. He believes the key to being a person of intellect is to be able to speak English properly. Of note, to him intellect does not refer to what one says; rather it merely refers to the language spoken and how the words are pronounced.
He says he is on a mission to widen the sea of our/ intellect and understanding.
