Kofi
Kofi is the protagonist of the story. The entire story is told from his perspective except for the beginning parts of each chapter which are stories told to Kofi by his grandfather, Nana Mosi. Kofi begins the novel wondering what will happen at his coming of age initiation. He is hungry for knowledge and wisdom about the world, but his brother, parents, and grandfather do not answer all of his questions as they attempt to give him only the information that is appropriate for his age. Kofi is set to race his cousin, Kofi Katari, in a swimming contest, and Ebo, Kofi’s best friend, believes Kofi will win. Kofi’s confidence waxes and wanes.
Eventually, Kofi is taken captive by the people of the Lower. He at first believes that he is being held as part of his initiation, but eventually he is brought to the king...
