Summary
In “The Story of the Story,” Nana Mosi tells how “There was even a time when human beings and spirits were neighbors and one of the things that connected us was story” (341). The Asante people would tell stories before the written word was invented. “Important messages were passed down through the generations” through stories passed down orally through rhymes and songs. This storytelling helped people make sense of the world that could sometimes be cruel. The stories also served to answer the many questions children had. Nana Mosi tells Kofi, “There will come a time when you will tell these stories to the ones who come after you… until the lions tell their side of the story, the tale of the hunt will always celebrate the hunter” (342).
