Summary
In “Welcome,” the captives are marched across the beaten red Earth and then are paddled along the Pra River until they get to a castle where the captors tell them the wonderfuls live. In the next poem, they approach the castle and see three heads on spikes at the entrance. Kofi realizes that he is crying when Crocodile tells him to be quiet. Kofi says that the severed heads remind him of Shakespeare, but this is real. In the next poems, the captors talk to two tall guards who do not speak Twi but speak in a language close enough that Kofi can understand them. One guard comes following two men in red coats who have green eyes that are hideous to Kofi. The men in the red coats are not happy that these boys are all that are brought...
