Summary

The symbol at the beginning of this chapter is the funtunfunefu-denkyemfunefu which represents two crocodiles who share the same stomach but still fight over food. It “is a reminder that infighting and tribalism is harmful to all who engage in it” (414). The introductory text to this chapter discusses the drum. “It is the heartbeat of our people” (131). The Asante people use this drum to entertain and to honor their Creator and ancestors as well as to mark special occasions like births, deaths, and rebirths.
