Book Two: Chapter I: Pages 81 - 95 Summary
Hig hardly moves until the third day. Finally, he buries Jasper, covering him with rocks. Then for three days he walks, hardly eating or sleeping, not knowing what else to do. On the third night, the snow falls. Finally, reality hits Hig, and he feels a sharp stab of fear to be caught that late in the day, that high above the snow line. Panic threatens to propel him back down but it is too late. He sets to the task of building a shelter. The days are a blur. On the tenth day since leaving, he beeps Bangley on the radio to let him know he is on his way. He has two deer on the sled, hoping it justifies how long he's been gone, but doesn't really care if it does...
