Summary
Chapter 11 is entitled “Edinburgh.” Emily traveled to England by boat. Meanwhile, Elizabeth opened a medical practice in New York City that specialized in tending to impoverished women and children. Emily briefly visited siblings in England and took a trip to London. She then went to Edinburgh, Scotland to continue her studies at the prestigious University of Edinburgh. She made the personal and professional acquaintanceship of renowned physician James Young Simpson, who became a mentor to her. She often accompanied Simpson during his work, and Simpson sometimes sent her to perform medical procedures without her. She tended to patients on her own as well, mostly impoverished women. Simpson made some innovation in the care of female patients, but Emily noticed that some of the treatments he employed were wholly ineffective.
