Summary
In Chapter 15, in 1990, Mago is the first in the family to graduate from high school and begins college. Also, the family’s green cards arrive, and they no longer need to live in fear of deportation. Reyna joins the marching band at her new high school and develops a crush on a boy named Axel. Meanwhile, Carlos breaks his leg playing soccer and Papi refuses to take him to the hospital to teach him a lesson. Eventually, he comes around. Mago, nearly 19 years old, has her first boyfriend. In Chapter 16, relations become tenser between Papi and Mago, who begins to resent contributing to household expenses and receiving abuse. She decides to throw a quinceañera for Reyna and puts all her time and money into planning it. Reyna recalls the special day when her family all gathered together.
