Summary
In Chapter 7, the children are surprised when, at last, one of the packages that arrive in the mail is actually for them. But they are hurt because their parents have sent them clothing and shoes that are much too small, proving they no longer know them. They curl up their toes to fit in the shoes and their feet blister all over. In Chapter 8, the children watch as the construction begins for their father’s dream house on the little piece of land on their grandmother’s property. They watch it build and think its completion will bring their parents back. But the money stops coming, and the workers stop working. They realize it is an empty dream.
