Summary
Daphne leads her children north along the interstate, where they are caught in a large caravan of evacuees. When the car begins to run low on gas, Daphne has to hunt for a filling station. She finally locates one, but realizes upon doing so that her purse has been left at the house in Miami. Daphne manages to beg twenty dollars from a woman in the lot, and blames Gavin for having misplaced her purse. After Daphne snaps at him, Gavin steps away to reflect on the fact that his decision to leave the purse in Miami was not an accident but an intentional one, part of his long campaign to punish Daphne for her perceived shortcomings. The family finally makes it to a fairgrounds where a Red Cross shelter has been established. Daphne continues to try and fail to get in touch...
