East Los Angeles
Located outside of downtown LA, the neighborhood Prescod-Weinstein grew up in was considered the bad part of town. Most residents were black or Latinx, and Prescod-Weinstein was bused several hours to school in a better part of town.
Harvard
Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Prescod-Weinstein’s undergraduate Alma matter is the home of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. It is the oldest and richest college in the U.S., and Prescod-Weinstein experienced outward discrimination, financial disadvantage and a general lack of community and belonging while there.
University of Waterloo
Located in Ontario, Canada, the University of Waterloo is where Prescod-Weinstein got her PhD in physics and cosmology. When Prescod-Weinstein returned five years later for a conference, she was gratified to speak with members of two student groups that had not existed when she was there – FemPhys and the Black Association for Student Expression.
