Summary

Chapter 16

The main course comes, and the floor manager explains everything on the plate. Paul asked him questions to prolong the lecture because he could see that Serge is desperate to eat. Claire and Babette have not returned. Serge has decided they should proceed without them. Paul decides to go find them.

Chapter 17

Paul checks the ladies’ room before going outside to find Claire and Babette. Paul goes into the garden and finds himself studying Serge through the window. Paul thinks about Serge’s reaction to the dinner and his daughter who wanted a picture. Serge was polite up to the point where the man began asking nosy questions. Serge then pretended to take a phone call to scare the man away. Paul admires Serge’s finesse, if not his motives.
