Summary

Two first person narratives are interspersed in Ghost Town Choir, that of a young boy, Bob, and his mother’s ex- boyfriend, Lawton. The story starts off with Bob describing his mother who was cleaning for the first time in six months. The day before she had broken up with Lawton. While she cleaned, Lawton was singing on their lawn with a boom box, asking her to take him back. Bob asked his mother why they had broken up and she responded “Because I’m a bitch, and he’s a son of a bitch, and the two never go well together” ( Location 1483). She started tearing up the floor telling Bob she was tired of it and wanted a change. She threw out Lawton’s records which distressed Bob as he knew that “they’re his whole life” ( Location 1465).
