Summary

Part six begins with a letter from Ditte to Megan Brooks, Esme’s daughter. Ditte explains that she has sent the letter and the trunk in care of Megan’s father because she thinks she should be braced for what she is to receive. She believes her father is best able to do that. Megan has always known that she was adopted, but this news about Esme’s death is new as well as is the contents of Esme’s trunk.

In her letter, Ditte explains to Megan that Esme has died. She tells her that Esme died when she was hit by a lorry on Westminster Bridge.
