Andrea Sachs, Andy to her friends and family, is a 23 year old recent graduate of Brown University that dreams of being a writer for The New Yorker. Having grown up in Connecticut with her mother, father and older sister Jill, Andy is ready to strike out on her own and make a success of herself.

Having spent the summer in Europe and India, and returning with dysentery, Andrea moves into the apartment of her best friend Lily in New York and looks for work. After an interview at Elias Clark, Andrea learns that she has been hired as the junior assistant to Miranda Priestly, the Editor in Chief of Runway Magazine.
