Summary

In Chapter 8, the wajinru were “unable to nurture [their] bodies” while trapped in the Remembrance (127). As their bodies waned, their minds filled with the pains of their ancestors. The imbalance felt unsustainable. The wajinru realized Zoti was foolish to believe that giving the memories to one historian could protect the wajinru collective from the History’s dangers. They now understood that memory was their power and was enlivened by them.

In the History, Omju and Basha talked about the past. One historian was unsure whether Zoti had really “seen bodies cast overboard . . . left to drown” (128). When she surfaced to investigate the truth, she was caught by a two-legs. Realizing the two-legs were real, she flipped herself off the boat and into the water. She reported her discovery to Basha and Omju. Omju decided Basha should protect the wajinru knowledge. Omju was hated by...
