Summary

In Chapter 16, Jane checked herself into the hospital for chest pain one morning. That evening, she was dead. Charles and James sat a basket on Jane’s desk into which church members could put notes they had written about Jane. Soon they needed a second basket to hold all the messages. James and Charles hired a young, black man named Marcus who needed a job so he could stay in school and not get drafted. The congregation did not question Charles and James' decision to hire Marcus.

In Chapter 17, Lily’s twins were born in a hospital that reminded her of her parents’ death. They named the boys Benjamin, whom they called Bip, and William, Will.
