Summary
In Chapter 1, Liselle talked to her mother, Verity, on the phone. Liselle told her mother that her husband Winn, an aspiring politician, was being indicted for corruption. She was panicked, and wanted Verity's help. Though Winn had been running for office, she had never believed he was involved in "anything illegal" (5). She suddenly felt anxious about the dinner party she was hosting that evening. Liselle asked for Verity's support, but Verity was no help. Liselle had talked to an FBI agent some time before, but she had had trouble believing what he said. She had kept their meeting secret. After hanging up with Verity, Liselle called her old friend Selena's mother's house, and left "a one-word message" (6).
