Summary

In Chapter 18, Ruby went dancing at a jazz club with Harrison Barton. While her intent continued to be seducing John through jealousy, she found herself enjoying her time with Harrison. As they chatted, Ruby admitted that her family was in a financially precarious position. Her father’s mayoral campaign had drained their assets. Mr. Tremaine believed that if he won the election, he could help create a world in which “Black people with wealth, education, and opportunities, [are] common” (148). Later, she told him about her ruby necklace that Mrs. Tremaine pawned. At home, her parents questioned her about the evening and her progress with John Davenport.
