Summary
In Chapter 11, Helen was startled when John approached her in the garden. She asked him about the party, and he confessed that he felt his independence and self-sufficiency dissipate whenever he returned home. As they talked, John jokingly asked her to dance, and they waltzed around the hanging laundry. In the following chapter, Olivia went on a stroll with Mr. Lawrence, chaperoned by her mother. They sat in the park chatting and Olivia strained to find a suitable topic of conversation.
