Self Sacrifice

Lee and Ruby are among the chief examples of this theme. Both are willing to do whatever it takes to protect the others. Ruby chases Suzume when she sees her for the first time, then realizes she should be leading Cate and Rob away from the little girl. When Lee and Chubs help her escape, she asks to be let out, saying she can’t put them in even more danger.
