Summary

In Chapter 20, Michael's group takes the guns Ruby's group brought with them, along with the supplies they had placed in bags to carry back. Ruby is having trouble focusing. Michael has Knox with him, though Knox is clearly confused. Michael's group shouts that “they” (312) have arrived, indicating soldiers, and they rush out, carrying their bags. The soldiers kill them all. Ruby is in distress but does not yet realize she has been shot. Olivia and Brett, another boy with blue power, believe they can throw the soldiers out of the way. Instead, Jude orders everyone to follow him, and Ruby can see the glow emanating from his body. Jude creates a “silent, blinding explosion” (315) from his electrical current and the blue children follow with a hit that clears the way for them to escape.
