Summary

Chapter 40 is written from Joe’s third-person perspective. Charlie relieves them at the Falstones and Joe and Holly search for Vera. Vera’s message had been hard to understand and she had sounded scared. Joe goes to Dorothy’s and Karan’s cottage while Holly waits on the track. Karan is still up. He has not seen Vera. Dorothy and Duncan are with Dorothy’s parents. Karan says Cath had come over for a tutoring session. Joe returns to Holly who says that the first message said that Vera was at Jinny’s Mill. She suggests that she run there and that Joe look for Vera along the way. Joe agrees and is hqppy that Holly has made a decision.
