Summary

Chapter 1 is written from Lorna's third-person perspective. She prepares her toddler, Thomas, to go out by putting on his snow suit and red boots. She thinks how lucky she is to have him and how she would fight to keep him. It is approaching the longest night of the year, and she considers staying in and decorating for Christmas. She also considers reconciling with her parents and inviting them to her home. However, she has something to do before she can celebrate. She and Thomas leave their house.
