Summary

In Chapter 20, Ballard is surprised that EMT Single calls her every hour until it is safe for her to sleep soundly. She does not wake until Bosch calls just before 4 p.m. He is watching the people at Raffa's memorial service, including a lot of gang members. Ballard joins him. Dr. Dennis Hoyle shakes the hand of Raffa's wife who does not seem to recognize him. Ballard and Bosch stop Hoyle on the sidewalk. Ballard moves her jacket aside to show her badge and gun. He claims his relationship with Raffa was nothing more than a business arrangement. Ballard asks how he knew Raffa needed a business partner. He says an adviser points out opportunities. Hoyle becomes agitated, claims they are harassing him, and leaves. Bosch and Ballard agree he is probably notifying his partners. Bosch asks if that was her intention, and...
