Elizabeth Lavenza
Elizabeth Lavenza (later Elizabeth Frankenstein) is the main character and narrator of the novel. While only 17 years old, Elizabeth speaks and acts in a very mature manner. This could be in part to her determination (and often obsession) with acting the way that those around her expect her to. This causes her to think of herself as different people: Victor’s Elizabeth, Henry’s Elizabeth, and so on. However, she is most fixated on Victor and has built her entire life around pleasing him. This makes it very difficult for Elizabeth to make new friends as she thinks they have no use for her. She also struggles to imagine a life without Victor and only begins to think of herself as her own person after she realizes what Victor’s work is really about.
