Summary

In Chapter One: To Be Weak Is Miserable, Elizabeth Lavenza travels in a carriage with her friend, Justine through a thunderstorm. Elizabeth tells her about the time that she and her friend Victor saw a lightning bolt hit a tree near the roof they were sitting on. Elizabeth was fascinated, but Victor was frustrated because it was something he could not control. It is revealed that Elizabeth learned that Victor’s father had planned on kicking Elizabeth out. So, she left to find Victor.

Elizabeth tells of a story when her abusive caregiver took her to the Frankenstein family. Madame Frankenstein wanted Elizabeth to be Victor’s special friend because he intimidated other children.
