Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis symbolizes the interruption of one’s life, both temporary and permanent. At the time that the characters are diagnosed with tuberculosis, the survival rate is extremely low, and thus they must face the possibility of imminent death. They are eventually saved by new antibiotics, but they still must suffer physical and psychological scars from the disease.
Hospital
The hospital symbolizes misery and dependence. After the patients arrive at the hospital, they are subjected to its intentionally stultifying atmosphere, which is designed to make them dependent on the hospital’s services. However, the characters manage to find a sense of solace in each other’s company.
Streptomycin
