Summary

In Chapter 44 Arthur is on a passenger ship that is travelling along the coast of Italy towards Spain. Arthur covertly steals an expensive dress from a wealthy female passenger. He plans to give it to Miriam the next time he sees her. He thinks about marrying her, but he ultimately does not think that marriage will suit him and his lifestyle. The theft is soon discovered, and when the ship reaches Spain, Arthur is imprisoned for his crime. In Chapter 45, Lenny, Miriam, Hannah, Sarah, and Valerie visit an artists’ colony in the village of Deià, Mallorca, Spain. Hannah is unimpressed, as she views the artists as simply pretending to be rebels while strictly living according to the rules of their small community. She compares the place to the hospital.
