Summary
In Chapter 9, a patient named Hannah Spiegel thinks about Lenny’s moment of panic and discord in the cafeteria. Hannah views the hospital as being structured around an oppressive system, and she believes that a collective rebellion is the only thing that can alter the system. In Chapter 10, Dr. Limb has a private meeting with Lenny and assures Lenny that the hospital can be a generally agreeable environment. Lenny mentions his father, who died of sickness when Lenny was a young boy. Dr. Limb says that there is currently no cure for tuberculosis, but patients may be taught how to keep from infecting others, and they may lead relatively normal lives in the world despite their relative weakness.
