Daniel “Mac” MacCormick
Mac, or Daniel Graham MacCormick, is the main character of the novel, and the novel is told from his first person perspective. Mac is the captain of The Maine, the employer of Jack, and the main man behind the entire Cuban affair (both in Cuba, and with Sara). Mac describes himself on the first page as “age thirty-five, and I’ve been described as tall, tan, and ruggedly handsome” (4). Mac is confident and sarcastic - often intended as a joke but sometimes coming out as rude and mean. Mac does not take much seriously, except for the survival of the people entrusted in his care - mainly Jack and later Sara. Mac is originally from Maine, which becomes an important symbol and setting, as he named his boat “The Maine, named for my home state - not for the American battleship that blew up in Havana...
