Summary

Chapter 1 starts in the first person from Daniel “Mac” MacCormick, as he waits at the Green Parrot bar in Key West for someone named Carlos. He is the owner of a fishing charter boat called The Maine, named for his home state, not the battleship. Carlos is Cuban-American and wanted to meet first in person, which was odd though he says he will do “whatever the customer wants. As long as it’s legal” (3). Amber, the bartender, chats with Mac as he waits and they make jokes. He thinks about his five years in Afghanistan, and his first mate Jack Colby who is a Vietnam vet. Before that he had worked on Wall Street, after graduating from Bowdoin College in Maine. Mac knows while he waits for Carlos that something must be up, and the chapter ends as he considers this.
