Summary

Jude wakes up in Locke’s room with few memories of the party. She leaves and finds Nicasia at the table. Nicasia reveals she was meant to marry Cardan, but Cardan ruined it. Jude leaves for lectures where a knight reveals one who kills a King or Queen cannot take the throne, as the original Queen Mab created a crown that can only be passed down and not obtained through violence. Only when there are fewer than two children - one to wear the crown and one to bestow it - can Faerieland be free from the crown’s magic. Jude asks what happens if someone tries to take the crown, and the teacher says one who is not a descendant of Queen Mab will die.
