Summary
In Chapter 13, Hadrian and Royce are traveling. Hadrian rides behind Royce because he feels beside him would seem too friendly. He does not want to be there. He believes that stealing is wrong. He is doing it to help Pickles have a better life. Hadrian does not understand why Arcadius wants him and Royce to work together. They are complete opposites. Hadrian believes that Royce would be better off going alone to steal the book. They talk about what has happened between them. Hadrian asks why Royce stabbed Angdon and killing all the people on the barge instead of telling him who he was, who they were and what they had planned. Royce likes his methods and plans to stick to them. Royce believes that Hadrian is gullible. Hadrian believes Royce is a cynic.
