The author uses the plot to show that as an adult, Eadlyn cannot always depend on her biological family to provide aid when she needs help. The author accomplishes this by not only having America have a heart attack, but by also placing her in a comma. Then, the author not only physically removes her father from Eadlyn, but also makes it impossible for him to perform his duties as king. Her twin brother is already gone and the author makes it clear that Eadlyn cannot turn to him for support when readers learn that he talked to his father, but not Eadlyn. The timing of the inability of Eadlyn’s nuclear family to provide support highlights their absence as she finds herself without her family as she takes on a new role and must lead people who do not like her.
