Secrets
The narrative uses the lives of several characters and the plot structure to explore the nature of secrets. The goal of the novel's genre as a mystery is to uncover a secret. One of the mysteries is the question of why Mildred disinherited her children. The answer explores the question of whether it is more destructive to tell the truth or keep the secret. The narrative puts forth arguments for both sides. Before the cousins go to the island, everyone is living an unsatisfying life. The family for the most part is better off once the secrets are revealed about the past and present events on the island. Milly understands why her mother behaved the way she did for all of these years. Allison is able to begin to forgive herself because she now has her family’s support. Now, at least, Aubrey may understand her...
