Summary

Chapter 1 is written from Milly’s perspective. Milly’s given name is Mildred. She was named after her grandmother, Mildred Story. However, Milly has never met her namesake because Mildred Story disinherited Milly's mother (Allison) and Milly’s uncles years ago. She told them that they know what they did to deserve this fate. Allison swears that she does not know what they did. Allison and Milly’s father are divorced. Milly’s last name is Story-Takashashi, and she uses it when she meets her mother at a restaurant after spending time at a bar, in spite of being a high-school student.

When Milly meets her mother, Allison tells her that she has a letter from her grandmother, Mildred. She lets Milly read it. In the letter, Mildred invites Milly to come to the resort she owns on Gull Cove Island to work...
