Paul Tillich (the author)
Paul Tillich was a German existentialist philosopher and Lutheran theologian. He was born in 1886 in Starosiedle, a small providence of Brandenburg, which was then a German territory and is now part of modern-day Poland. He studied at several universities during the early 1900s, including the University of Berlin and the University of Tubingen. He received a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Breslau in 1911 and an equivalent degree in theology a year later. He is best known for his three-volume systematic theology, first published in the 1960s, as well as several important works intended for a more popular audience, including the present book. In 1933 he was dismissed from his appointment when Adolf Hitler became the German chancellor.
