Summary

The novel is narrated in chapters that alternate between “Now” in first-person present and “Then” in first-person past by the main character, Goldie. In the prologue, first-person present is also used, but Goldie seems to speak from the future. Goldie muses on how perfect Camp Alpine Lake was before she learned about its dark secrets during the summer after senior year.

In Chapter One, Goldie’s parents drive her to Camp Alpine Lake before anyone else. She lives in Roxwood, a little town a few miles outside the gate. Goldie’s mom works as the woodworking teacher at the camp and her dad works as the nurse. Because of this, Goldie has been coming to camp for free ever since she was eight.
