Summary

In "Youth," Chapter 1, Tove works only one day at her first job. Her mother insists she will help her find a new one.

In Chapter 2, Tove gets a new job at a boarding house. She dislikes the work. One day, she sees Editor Brochmann's obituary in the paper. Alfrida notices Tove is upset, and says if she does not "top being so strange," no one will marry her (111).

In Chapter 3, Tove gets depressed. One day, Ruth suggests she and Tove try convincing "a very rich man" she knows to make them chorus girls (114). Tove gets excited. When they meet the man, Mr. Krogh, he says Tove is not suited to be a chorus girl. He lends her a book, and Tove feels "a silent understanding" form between them (116).

In Chapter 4, Tove only feels alive when she is visiting Mr. Krogh (120). Ruth warns...
