Summary
Chapter 27, "The Way You Are," catches up with Maddy and Matthew, having a picnic lunch in a cemetery where Maddy had been taking photos for a collage project. Maddy’s surrogate father, Arthur, and his beloved wife, Nola, are buried in the same graveyard, and Maddy had chosen to have her and Matthew’s wedding there in order to feel closer to her departed savior. Being close to Arthur’s memory is a major reason why Maddy wanted to return to his old house in Mason, and Matthew understands and supports her. Matthew brings Maddy to the very spot under a tree where they had been married, and he pledges his unyielding love and commitment to her.
