Summary

Chapter 23, "The Value of Pie," finds a saddened Iris the following day, just before she is supposed to close on the sale of the farm. She remembers waiting for John the night before, coming across his private journal and reading it despite knowing it was wrong. After reading John’s conflicted thoughts about Iris, whom he clearly adores and respects, she understands that his obsession with finding Laura is an attempt for him to heal the wreckage of his past.
