Summary
The Sympathizer finds himself in some kind of “afterlife,” which is blindingly white. He wears Le Cao Boi’s authentic aviators. A voice that sounds like the Maoist PhD’s asks him if he is ready to begin. The Sympathizer is really convalescing in a room in Paradise, and has been writing a confession for weeks with the encouragement of the Maoist PhD and under the supervision of the very chic, very tanned doctor. He shares a room with a kind old gentleman, who speaks Arabic. The Sympathizer discovers that the very chic, very tanned doctor is Tunisian. The Maoist PhD asserts that The Sympathizer has become a nihilist, and he vehemently denies this, saying that he believes in nothingness.
