Summary
Elizabeth protected her sickly granddaughter, Lottie, in Chapter 5. Two elderly women split up Elizabeth and Mary along with the children. When the tribes packed up to move again, Elizabeth and Lottie were kept by the Comanche, and Mary, Jube, Cherry, and Millie were taken by the Kiowa. Elizabeth was "claimed as a slave" by Eaten Alive's first wife, Tabimachi (46). Tabimachi mistreated Elizabeth, who did her best to be "useful and needed" to stay alive (46). Forty-year-old Elizabeth continued to weaken without proper food and rest as she performed difficult tasks like preparing buffalo hide. Lottie was on the verge of death, as she was made to sleep outside the tipi's entrance.
